Kate Atkinson knows how to present a series of many, seemingly unconnected and disparate characters and sew all their stories together tidily and with humor and forgiveness, but little sentimentality. At first it's a little disconcerting (where's she going with this?) but by now I've read enough of her books that I can relax and enjoy the unfolding of a well-written yarn, and trust that she won't leave me in the lurch.

I loved this book! The writing reminds me of Ruth Rendell and is every bit as good, with the characters' musings about life. They are at once very British and universally human. The plot is like a Spirograph, the way it loops around the initial scene and then starts looping further afield - but this is done so well that it actually helps the reader keep track of who's who. And then just when you're getting comfortable with how everyone is doing, crazy things start happening!
This is the second of a series and I really want to go back and read the first. It's hard to tell in this one that the central character is a British detective and I really want to see how he ended up where this one begins. If Susan Isaacs were sisters with Ruth Rendell, their mother would be Kate Atkinson (though this might imply some kind of time travel inversion or something).

Another Jackson Brodie. I don't know if I love these books but I seem to keep reading them.

A good airplane read. Martin, Car Guy, Gloria
Okay, I like these twisty mysteries with the many loose threads that tie up so neatly at the end. Like book one, there were multiple plot lines running together and intersecting in expected and unexpected ways. A pleasure to read

I listened to this, and I was SO disappointed in the audio version. There were sound effects, music ... ugh. Not my kind of audio book. It really interfered with the story for me.
If I read this instead of listening to the audio, I'm sure I would have given it at least 3 stars.
