Very enjoyable read to celebrate finishing finals. Made better by reading after a semester of rabbinical school. Would read others of Dykewomon’s books

When the book group chose this book I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get into it. I'm not a big fan of historical fiction I much prefer my reads more on the contemporary side, so I approached it with some trepidation. I actually found it quite interesting and engaging. I was engaged by the intertwined stories of Chava, Gutke and the women in their lives. I did find it a bit confusing when the perspective switched without warning from one woman to another. Sometimes it took me a while to figure out who exactly was narrating.

Unique and moving story of a Jewish family fleeing the Russian pogroms to try to find a better life in America. The sexual awakening of a young woman and her female lover, the politics of women's suffrage and workers' rights, and the tragedy of the Triangle Factory fire interweave to form a remarkable and memorable saga.

I wasn't so sure when I started this book. I wasn't so sure a quarter of the way in, but then I got hooked. It's a good historical novel with lesbians at the center.
