Lovely story about a young girl who marries into an indigenous community and they embrace her as their own so much so that at the end she considers herself one of them. Heartbreaking story of how colonization affected the indigenous communities and stripped them of their heritage and culture. Trigger warnings: residential schools mention as well as miscarriage, alcohol, death.

Immersive. Transportive imagery and descriptions. Michel Jean presents the richness of traditional indigenous life and culture and allows us to fall in love with it, be at home and at peace in it as his great grandmother was. Then your heart is shattered and you're filled with rage against the colonial project that destroyed the land, the lives, the languages, the cultures and the spirits of so many indigenous people.

This is a beautifully written book about lost identity and importance of roots. Almanda will be forever be remembered as Kukum (grandma)

A fabulous story of an amazing woman. At 15, this Irish orphan marries an 18 year old Innu and raises 9 children in the bush. She sees the death of the nomadic life of the Innu and how it destroyed them. A must read for anyone interested in Indigenous life and the effects of colonialism. Beautifully written.
