2023 seems to have been my year of reading about Indigenous peoples' experience of colonisation. Kukum talks about the Innus of Quebec through the lense of Almanda's long life. Almanda, our narrator, was also the author's great-grandmother, which makes her fictional memoirs all the more poignant. Kukum brings to the fore the questions of forced sedentarisation and of children's removal but it is never self-pitying. Mostly I found Kukum to be a testimony of the Innus' resilience and an ode to an amazingly beautiful and challenging environment.

À mon avis, la prose est très belle malgré son caractère quelque peu simpliste. J'ai eu l'impression que l'émotion et l'intensité de l'intrigue était toujours en croissance. Pour tout dire, j'apprécie le récit que Michel Jean a raconté.

Il était dans ma liste à lire depuis longtemps, je l'avais reçu en cadeau d'ailleurs. Je l'ai laissé se faire désirer, mais assurément, je n'attendrai pas aussi longtemps avant de lire les autres romans de cet auteur. Les mots sont si bien choisis pour partager la beauté et la douceur, tout comme les atrocités. Un incontournable.
