Fun little comedy with nice themes of love, revelry and gender fluidity. Maybe I would’ve had a bit more if I had just read it instead of studying it.

Macbeth remains my favourite of Shakespeare's works but I must admit Twelfth Night is a close second. I've yet to read one his plays that I didn't enjoy but I was surprised by how much I liked Twelfth Night. Historically I've always been drawn to the darker more bloody stories regardless of form. This particular play falls firmly under the category of comedy and doubtless would've had more of a comical impact when it was originally published and preformed.
The plot enters mainly around Viola, a woman of aristocracy who after washing up on a shore in Illyria after a storm decides to make her own way in the world. Believing her brother, who is also her guardian is dead she disguises herself as a man named Cesario. In an attempt to assist Duke Orsino, 'Cesario' attempts to woo a lady named Olivia on his behalf...only it isn't Orsino Olivia falls for.
Remember, it would've been men playing the roles of women in the 1600's so Viola would've been played by a man, acting as a woman who was pretending to be a man..hence the extra comedic factor. If you're not a fan of Shakespeare then you probably wouldn't enjoy this, however if you have any interest in Shakespeare or drama I highly recommend.
