Thank you Macmillan Audio and Linda Castillo for my #gifted copy of this audio in exchange for an honest review!
This was such an interesting thriller specifically because of the Amish component. It was fascinating learning about their culture and relationship to the outside world. The middle dragged a bit, but it ended with a bang and I really enjoyed it!
I really liked how fearless Kate was as the chief of police. She didn’t let her colleagues push her around or let personal biases cloud her judgment. Her being formerly Amish added great complexity to the case surrounding a murder in the Amish community.
When I first started this book I didn’t realize it was the 16th in a series, but the good thing is you can read it as a standalone and not be confused. This was an enthralling Amish thriller and I can’t wait to read more of this series.

ARC read, pub day 7/2024: I'm obsessed with this series and I will devour everything Linda gives us in the Amish/Kate universe. You learn right away that this is going to be a story with darker themes and it did not disappoint. I love being dangled right to the very end not knowing where we were going, but Kate/tomasetti always make it out on top. I've also enjoyed watching their relationship grow alongside the thriller plotlines. Always recommend Linda Castillo's books!

This is book 16 in the Kate Burkholder series and I am happy to say that overall it holds up. This is not one where some of the books are better than others, instead each one is a solid read.
We are following Chief of Police Kate Burkholder who lives in a small town in Ohio where half the population is English and the other half is Amish. She is able to bridge the gap between both because she was raised Amish, but ended up leaving the community after a horrific event. At the beginning of the book, we are following the victim who is taken and burned at the stake. We then follow as Kate and her team try to determine who is responsible and discover what kind of man he was.
My one critique, which is one that I’ve had throughout the series , is that I wish we got more from the supporting characters. In some of the books we do, but this is one where we are missing out on a lot of the people I really enjoy reading about. I did feel that the guilty party kind of came out of left field, In a way it would have been better for a different person to have been guilty of the crime. All in all it was a great read, and I will keep up with the series when the next one comes out.

I dont know if the killer/s were supposed to be a big mystery, but it had a decent conclusion with fun action and lore. The inclusion of Amish culture made for an interesting read, and an ex-amish cop an even more interesting main protagonist. The characters themselves just weren't that compelling making the story a little dull.
This was a good book, including both Thomeseti and Kate as well as Kate’s brother. It was a bit more unrealistic than usual, and Kate made even worse decisions than she has previously. Still a fun read although there was a new love interest at the beginning of the book that we never heard any more about.
