I really liked this book! It has such deep world building, while following characters as they learn how to become a member of The Library. We also follow how they grow during the adversity between The Burners (who hate The Library) and power and reach of The Library in the world. As you read you can find yourself changing which side you root for.

There's magic, action, suspense, friendship, and finally the power of knowledge and love.

I'm excited to finish the series!

I liked it, but not enough to keep reading the series.

I started this book a few years ago then stopped early on because I thought I'd love it.
That fast paced opening chapter hooked me and I loved the inclusion of a young woman in a hijab being the smartest of the hroup.

Jess Brightwell is a passionate protagonist, he is intelligent but comes from a world of smuggling where his desire to learn and love of the books they sell makes him a bad fit for the family business.

A fun dystopian sci-fi that reimagines libraries and how knowledge is kept and accessed. Overall, this seems like a fun book for book lovers. Unfortunately, it never had a wow factor for me, and none of the characters stood out. Each time a character died I found myself trying to remember who that was and why the protagonist should be upset about it.

A solid and brutal book that becomes more and more complicated as it goes and promises to reveal more and more as the series continues. I’m intrigued enough by the world building and how it probes at the many ways books and knowledge are power that I will likely read more of the series, but I also might not. There’s too much death and murder and torture and fear to be an truly enjoyable read for me.
