3.5 Stars. This was a solid read, but I did not enjoy it as much as the first of the series.

The audiobook narrator was perfectly fine, but perhaps I just appreciate this series more in book form.

Sometimes - well, often - I don't like the second novel in the series, especially if I really liked the first one. I am pleased to report that was not the case with Attica Locke's sophomore novel in the Highway 59 series. Locke continues to develop her characters so well. Darren, our protagonist, becomes more complex in this second novel. His relationships with himself, his wife Lisa, his friend Greg, and other secondary characters continue to deepen.

At the end of the novel (fear not- no spoilers), aspects of the plot are still not resolved. While the first book in the series had a very plot-focused cliffhanger, this novel has a more character-focused cliffhanger. Some relationships hang in the balance, and we're not sure what will become of them in the third novel, which - as far as I can tell - has no publication date. Oh, there had better be one coming!

Of course, I did enjoy the mystery within this novel. I must confess, though, that I did enjoy the character development and relational aspects a tiny bit more. The mystery certainly kept the plot going forward, but I am really enjoying watching these characters grow and learn more about themselves and each other. I am waiting for the third novel in the series with high anticipation!

Could have been a great story but too political
