Vigil by Mariah Thayer (5⭐️) :

I had the absolute pleasure of beta reading this story for Mariah, so I was able to see both the before and after (after sending her my feedback) of the changes she would make in her story in contribution to this anthology. I am in no way an experienced beta reader and if my feedback is of any use is another matter entirely, but I definitely think it was of use in this situation for an author whom I have not read as much of. Mariah is a dear friend and I've read a few of her novels here and there (mostly in anthologies), and I'm very much looking to her own novel Defiance . Since sharing her cover in a cover reveal post, I've been unable to stop thinking about it and the enticing blurb.

But, enough of that for now. It's time to talk about Vigil.

Vigil is not your run-of-the-mill Halloween romance, and I mean that with all positivity and heart. It means that this book--like its author--stands out among the growing throng of Halloween/paranormal reads. Mariah creates a story with an interesting twist to its concept. Her story retains the feel good Halloween theme readers will know and love, but there's an added extra something in there. Technically, 'four' added extras, but you'll discover that when you get to that part of the story.

On the most important time and day of the year for the residents of this New England town, Aisling's night doesn't go exactly as planned. Things take a turn for the worse (or better, depending on your perspective), and her destiny and fate is shifted away from the life she's always known, and into many hands. Spooky as it is steamy, Vigil delivers a story that enlightens us on just one of the things that can happen on Samhain, and how that no matter how we may think our lives may go, some things are just out of our hands and in those of fate and destiny. Not all battles are lost, said and done. Sometimes losing one battle means winning another, and Aisling certainly did just that.

Mariah delivered to us a story which I personally think people will enjoy. I did. I'm certainly getting more and more stories along this trope type (again, you'll know when you read the story), as well as still enjoying the 'traditional' m/f romance. In fact, I enjoyed this so much that I put in a request that there be an extension of the story, perhaps even a full novel with these characters. I wanted more, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I was a glutton for this story and wanted more.

5/5 for Vigil and Mariah!

TW/CN - Tropes/Genre
Anthology, arc, bisexual, bonded-mates, dark-romance, demons, fantasy, fated-mates, forbidden-romance, gay, instalove, lgbtqai, magic, mc, monsters, pansexual, paranormal, polyamory, queer, read, retellings, romance, sci-fi, shifter, short-story, spicy, suspense, thriller, torture, v-card, vampires, violence, war, why-choose, witches.. And so much more y'all!

I enjoy anthologies, but most of the time there are those few stories that are not as good as the others. Not here. Each story is really good, you also get a nice blurb and spice o meter, so you know ahead of time what you are getting into.

I HIGHLY suggest getting a copy of this anthology and giving each story a read.

My favorite was, Who's Afraid of the Sexy Villain by Amanda V Shane. Steam, perfect. Tropes used, on point!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is an amazing collection of Halloween/Samhain themed romances. Each are very unique and are a blast to read. There is no lack of magic and steam in this anthology. There is a fantastic mix of tropes and paranormal that any romance read that like magic with their romance.
