I genuinely liked this book. Joe as a narrator is really unique and fascinating and the truly bleak story is cut with his naïveté that makes it possible to read till the end. This is a beautifully written novel, very poetic in its simplicity. Personally, I think this book is what A Little Life wanted to be - dismal and so sad but for a purpose. I found this story to be much more about poverty and the prison that is masculinity than a gay book, but it’s worth the time and the emotional energy. Also the movie is a very faithful adaptation and I would recommend the two in tandem.
