Listen I love Lestat de Lioncourt. I'm content just to spend time with him. Is the book's nearly 500-page length indulgent? Perhaps. Could I have done without the ancient vampire lore? Certainly. But my god when Anne Rice is on she's ON. Sprinkled among the frankly tiresome discussions of vampire history and politics are some of the most beautiful and thought-provoking prose I've ever read: evocative descriptions that fill you with the spirit of a time and place; insightful character portraits that hint at a deep reverence for and understanding of the human condition; genuinely profound meditations on the nature of good, evil, and life's purpose. There's so much good here. But at the end of the day, I think Anne Rice is more excited about weaving an intricate undead tapestry for her swashbuckling hero to traverse through than I am. I reeeeallyyyy don't care about the greater vampire universe. I just want my boys to brood and kiss and shoot the shit. Would I read it again? Maybe. Will I be reading the rest of the series? Definitely not. Am I slowly going insane waiting for season 3 of the AMC tv show? Jesus Christ yes. Did this help? A little yeah. :)
