God, I hate Lestat. And why donāt more people talk about his creepy incestuous relationship with his mom? Ugh. The only interesting parts of this one are Marius and Akasha and Enkil.

The book started slowly, with lestat speaking directly to the reader. It felt like an early YouTube vlog, more than a book about a 300 year old vampire.
And then the pace picked up. And then it DID feel like a book about a 300 year old vampire. It was good, all around, though most of the characters not from France still heavily resembled white people, which I found a bit odd.

i donāt know why iām rating this five stars as there was in fact vampire incest but i really really really enjoyed this dumb book. lestatās narration is so fun to read (he is an unreliable whiny bastard and i love him for it) and i loved all the little glimpses at vampire lore (armand and mariusās relationship especially was so fascinating to read). lestat is strongest as a character when he is with others, and the connections he builds over the course of the book are incredible - and the love he holds for many of the vampires he meets is so touching arghhhhhhhdhjff. ALSO THE LOUSTAT MOMENTS HAD ME SOBBING HELLOOOO anyways.
my only real complaint was that i was very hyped for rockstar lestat and 1 he was barely there (the concert scene was written with such palpable enthusiasm and lust for life that it was kinda worth the wait though) but 2 his lyrics are god awful. i was picturing him the entire time just as damiano david of mĆ„neskin and unfortunately i think he is far too much of a loser for that. rhyming ālestatā and āsabbatā had me howling of laughter like be fr. ALSO THE INCEST THAT IS A COMPLAINT TOO
also gabrielle was a genderqueer lesbian icon who coped with the rules of 1700s france by kissing her son on the mouth i guess i donāt make the rules i just inhabit the world anne rice did weird stuff in
okay rambly review over sorry im excited for queen of the damned

This was such a different journey than the first book and SO much more enjoyable. Lestat is an incredibly enigmatic character and I found all of the vampire lore and history so incredibly fascinating and well done. Iām very glad I decided to revisit this series and read more of the books!
