A unique horror graphic novel that takes a new approach to an end-of-the-world scenario.
I did find it a little confusing to keep track of all of the characters because they had at least two names that they were known by as well as all having a symbol attached to them. I do think that I was starting to get to grips with who’s who by the end of this volume by it did somewhat impact my enjoyment as I was struggling to remember the dynamics between the characters.
I really enjoyed the insight we got into how the mysterious host had picked each of his friends to survive the apocalypse. I also really enjoyed the fact that it did not shy away from the truly gruesome body horror.
It was an interesting approach to focus less on the practicalities of survival and focus more on the mental toll that being one of the last people alive would take. It was challenging at times to read as we truly saw these characters hitting rock bottom but it was never not interesting.
I definitely plan to finish reading this series as I really have no idea where it was going and that is so fascinating to me.
So freaking good. I'm glad I didn't read the synopsis for this before going in. Though it doesn't tell you much anyway. Desperate to get Vol. 2!
2023 Review:
I re-read this because I felt a little lost when I attempted to read the second volume recently (after reading a little of the 2nd volume I stopped and read the first one again so I could THEN read the 2nd volume again).
Anyways, the re-read was just as enjoyable, actually, probably more so, because I had an easier time of keeping characters straight since the overall concept wasn't something I was also trying to grasp at the same time. So, definitely worth a second read and kept it's 5 star reading upon re-read.
2022 Review:
Everything I read lately from James Tynion IV is just gold.
This is unique and interesting and my only complaint would be that there are too many characters to follow really well, or get to know really well, but I know from reading past Tynion series that he's likely to do them all justice and give them their own arcs so we become more familiar and comfortable with them. I can't wait to read more! Love the storyline premise, especially Walter.

Les dessins sont phénoménaux et l’atmosphère tellement riche dès la première page. Reste à voir si le 2e volume va être capable de conclure tous les mystères de façon satisfaisantes.

intriguing. a bit of mystery for mystery's sake
also a lot of vaguely ominous monologues
