I’m writing this review over 2 weeks after finishing the book and I can’t remember why I only gave it 3 stars… I went into this series with SUCH high hopes. I LIVE for Sierra Simone’s New Camelot trilogy, and this series added even MORE people to the orgy AND was supposed to emulate a “Secret Garden” kind of spooky vibe? Have magic? It should have been PERFECT!
I liked all of the closure we got from our group’s parents and the insight we got into Thornchapel from them. I really liked that Poe and Beckett went through the door as a “sacrifice” and Auden and Saint got married to live happily ever after until the door opened again and they could be with Poe. I liked that they finally got to reunite with her and have their happy ending.
I was a bit frustrated that the magic aspect of this series took so long to truly materialize. Maybe that’s part of the suspense, but the first three books really made it seem like the “magic” could have been completely fake and this world is normal just like our world, and finally in this book we ACTUALLY have powers and sicknesses and magic doors. I think I would have liked more of that throughout the series, less Delphine and Rebecca drama, and just… so much more Auden. I loved his character arc and I think that being fleshed out would have worked so well.

I started this a few weeks ago, got bored and left it. I’m still not into it. Tbh I skimmed a few chapters in the middle there, but I don’t feel like I missed much.

I’m so immensely grateful to have found this book because this is everything I’ve ever wanted to read about a group of friend who finds themselves living in a gothic mansion where strange things start to happen. They’re a family and so much more. They’re tied to each other for life. I’ve loved how much everyone cared so deeply about the other, how they were constantly talking, communicating, taking care of each other.
This book is so weird. In moments I thought I was too stupid to fully understand what was going on but the atmosphere and aesthetic of the entire story totally compensated for my lack of brain. You can truly see how deeply Sierra researched for this story. She’s a queen, totally a queen. Our kinky queen.
I’ve loved every moment of this story, every sex scene, every kinky scene, every scene where they’re just joking in front of the fireplace or when they take the dog out for a walk. This book is so detailed, it really makes you KNOW the characters. They become your friends too.
In conclusion, stan sleepy librarian, kinky king, and the other (broody) librarian. My girl Poe was sleeping for half of the book but her brain was wide awake!

First thoughts on finishing: the last 30 pages should have been at least 100. The end was slightly too rushed for me, some events we hear of in the last chapters should have been on page. It wasn’t an ending that I expected but I can’t think of a more fitting end for the characters that matches the tone of this story.
I liked that the big problem encountered by the characters in this series didn’t have a magical get out of jail free card at the very end.
Honestly I have nitpicking issues with all four books but in the end I just don’t care enough to give less than 5 stars. This world is beautiful and the characters will always be a group that stay in my head.
I love this series and will reread regularly just to fall back into this world.
