This was terrifying, fascinating, and informative. I love learning about individuals that have been ignored by history when they really shouldn't be. The story of Henrietta Lacks is impressive in scope and I'm happy to have learned about her, her family, her cells, and their impact on the medical world.
Through no fault of her own Henrietta Lacks is the most important person where modern medicine is concerned and most people don't know her as anything more than HeLa. Skoolt did a fantastic job of telling the story of Mrs. Lacks and her family along with the journey her cells have taken. I was mostly interested in the science and politics of this story when I began but ended up falling in love with the family that by the end I was reading with a tissue clutched to my chest.

This book was a great mix of a true life story, science, history, ethics, and race. The story of Henrietta and her family would have been eye-opening and interesting even without the impact she eventually had on science. When you add in the impact that Henrietta unknowingly had on science and medicine, this books becomes a unique mixture of compelling people and hard science. The author incorporates science into the book in a readily accessible way, so there is no need to worry about getting lost in technical aspects. I was particularly enthralled with the evolution of science that has occurred in the last several decades, and the considerable strides made in medical and research ethics since that time. There were many times in the story when I couldn't believe science was doing X as recently as 1950/1960/1970. While much progress has been made, the book brings up many ethical issues that still loom and will not easily be solved.
The book was an easy, interesting read, and a great way to deal with some science, technology, and ethics without getting in too deep.
