Fascinating story and so well written! I was not planning on reading this but once I started I couldn't stop!

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks dives deep into the woman whose “HeLa” cells changed science and her family’s quest for answers decades beyond her death. The author clearly devoted significant time to understanding the broad uses of the HeLa cells since they were taken from a biopsy of Henrietta Lacks’ cervical cancer cells in 1951: cancer treatments, vaccines, disease research, understanding of the human genome, and so much more. She also spent lots of time with Lacks’ family, who had no idea her cells were being used for such purposes. The book grapples with the ethical issues of consent for medical & scientific research, racism and classism in medical treatment, and who has the right to human tissue once it is removed during a medical procedure. Thought-provoking and informative, this nonfiction still manages to grab the reader’s attention from start to finish!

skimread - figured pretty quickly the style didn't work for me but the actual content is good

I can’t believe I’ve been a scientist for so long without reading this book. This should absolutely be mandatory reading in science education!!!
