I appreciated this look into the history of exploitation in the name of scientific achievement. However, I wasn’t a big fan of how the author continued to pursue the narrative from her kin. It felt invasive in its own way.

In all honesty, I'd probably give this 3.5 stars. It was an interesting read, but not really my type of book.

I loved the human interest story and the science stuff was interesting, especially from a historical perspective. She did a good job of making it easier for the layperson to understand, even if science isn't their thing. I liked the chapters where she described her research and trying to get the story from the family best.

Worth the read if you like that sort of thing.

The interwoven narratives of the HeLa cells changing the world of medicine and Deborah Lacks searching for understanding of what happened to her mother make this book one of the more captivating historical books I've ever read. This book will have the reader wondering what the world would look like if it wasn't for Henrietta Lacks and her immortal cells and gives a glimpse into the life and family that they came from.

The science, the history and the humanity in this book are eye-opening. I was fascinated, angry, and sad at the same time.
A must read.
