Oh boy, this book was devastating. I have heard great things about this book, and everyone was absolutely right. There is a part in the book where a scientist explains what Henrietta's cells have been used for and allows her children to look at the cells through a microscope. He just answered questions that the children had, and you can just feel their stress unwinding. It's absolutely devastating that they were in contact with so many different people in the scientific and medical fields, and no one thought to explain to them what they were being tested for, what the HeLa cells were being used for, etc. I firmly believe that if someone had explained this to them sooner, they would have dealt with so much less stress and emotional strife. Ugh, it truly breaks my heart so so so much. There is another part in this book where they visit the institution that one of Henrietta's daughters was put into, given her mental and physical disabilities. There, they find out devastating news about her death and her treatment throughout her time. I sobbed and sobbed. This book does contain a lot of sensitive topics, and I highly suggest reading trigger warnings before picking it up.
