Henrietta Lacks has already regularly saved my life with her cells. This book is long overdue, and a must read for everyone.
This book was 2 stories in 1. One was about HeLa cells and the scientific world they revolutionized and how they did it, and the other was about Henrietta Lacks and her family. The author, Rebecca Skloot, works with Henrietta's children, especially her daughter, to tell the story behind the woman whose cells became HeLa and what her life was like as a black woman growing up in Viginia in the 1920s and moving to Baltimore in the 40s. She did a very thorough job researching and explaining the scientists, their processes and research, the history of the cells, and exploring the ethics of using tissue from patients without their knowledge and consent. This was a very meaty and intense book!

Felt drawn out in some areas but overall I appreciated the author choosing to make this about the family rather than just HeLa itself. Overall a great read.
