Reads like a novel - very interesting subject matter even if you aren't into science.

“She's the most important person in the world and her family living in poverty. If our mother is so important to science, why can't we get health insurance?” --Dale Lacks

This book was right up my alley. Recommended to me by a friend, as soon as I read the summary I thought it could be a Radiolab episode. Then I read that Skloot contributed to the podcast on occasion!

A science based biography of sorts, along with a deep dive into Henrietta’s family history and their experiences coming to terms with the (racist and unethical) medical treatment of patients in the distant and not so distant past.

It also raises thought provoking questions about current medical practices (primarily related to research using human “samples”) that I hadn’t previously contemplated. Although I don’t think I will change my current medical directive to donate my body to science after death.
