I loved how even though the two point of views of the fox, Snow, and the detective,  were unrelated for the majority of the plot, it was curious and intriguing to watch the threads connect between their narratives. I love stories about spirits and to have this story told from the point or view of one, a spirit who sees the good in people despite her experience with some of the worst of people and her grief that drives her for most of story is beautiful. I loved the way the foxes cultivated the mystery around themselves and the variety of ways that people were affected by the fox spirits. I do wish that the author had specified  the magical skills that foxes can use more than that they can exert their will onto humans and turn into foxes and take away people yin and yang (but only if they study that particular skill). I found the ending of this story very fulfilling even though not every mystery was solved.

A really cool exploration of an aspect of Manchurian culture I was not aware of. I appreciated learning about foxes and fox myths. The storyline was compelling and I liked Snow as a main character, Shiro and Kuro were fascinating foils. Really really enjoyed this one.

I love these historical, not quite fantasy, mature and complex stories that YC writes! And her audio narration is always top notch — her voice is beautiful, the pacing fits perfectly, and of course, her bilingualism is excellent.

Snow, our main character, is curious, clever, and occasionally foolish, like any good fox spirit. She’s experienced a horrible thing, and she’s set out on a quest for revenge, but she can’t help being a good fox along the way. I love her interactions with people, and her internal monologue is charming.

Bao’s story is a sweet counterpart to Snow’s — as he follows along behind on her trail, we learn more about Snow from outside perspectives, and the events preceding the beginning of the novel. His relationship with Taktah (sp?) is cute too!

YC paces her books in the way I like best — it starts slowly, from far away, but as the end comes closer and closer, it speeds up to fly by you like a train. It’s never good to have too many foxes in one place!
