A friend who happens to also be a fellow teen librarian recommend this book to me. I started reading it not knowing what to expect but I absolutely LOVED it. I read a library copy, but I want to go buy my own copy and highlight and underline so much. Def gonna also buy a copy for my library.

I love the writing style, the fact that it’s a modern book about modern teens who talk like modern teens with their interests is so refreshing. It’s so original, and is both a book lovers book and a music lovers book. I wanna go back and read all the authors mentioned throughout and I wanna listen to the playlists!!!

This was a short little book but it had a really great story :')

Angel has moved to Brooklyn from California after an incident with her ex. As the book starts, we don't know what happened, but she has a bruised face and is in a sling. She left her mom and 4 siblings in California as she came to live with her uncle. There is not a ton of focus on her past, including the family she left behind, and instead this book is focused on where she goes from her move.

She's at a school and in a program that is really focused on underprivileged kids succeeding, not only in their careers, but in their relationships with one another and themselves as well. It's nice to watch Angel have such support from adults in her life.

She also makes lots of female friends, she meets boys but is very clear about not being ready for anything after being recently out of her toxic relationship, and she just gets to know herself and what she likes separate from the people in her old life that held her back.

It's just a really heartwarming book even though Angel went through a lot before we knew her, because we get to watch her slowly heal and it was just very special. Recommend it especially since it's a short read!!

4 STARS. Vinyl Moon may have been the shortest book that I've read so far this year, but each page definitely carries emotional weight. When I pick up short books, I end up loving them most of the time. This is one of them. The story follows Angel, a teen girl reeling from the scars of her past relationships who tries to find healing through strong Black Writers, music and the community she became part of in a new city.

I loved how Angel's story unravels on every page through prose, poems, and vignettes. It even made me relive a childhood memory with my mom that I treasured the most. As the author puts it, it's a story about how we rebuild ourselves after a terrifying moment and the people we become if we allow ourselves the chance.

TW: Physical Assault, Domestic Violence, Catcalling, Anxiety Attack, etc. Please practice self-care by looking up additional TWs.

Huge thanks to Get Underlined for this gifted copy!

Mahogany L. Browne can write a stellar succinct novel full of developed characters and a great story arc. I loved this novel in sometimes verse, mostly prose about Angel moving from California to Brooklyn after an incident with her then-boyfriend that slowly develops as Angel gets more and more comfortable with herself and her new life in Brooklyn. A great read.

Overcoming adversity

Angel is such a sweet character and I really enjoy her growth and empowerment in this novel. I enjoy positive stories of black girls recovering from mistakes with the support of family, friends, and educators.

Another great book by poet/author Mahogany L. Browne! In her sophomore YA novel we get to know Angel, a young African American teen girl who has been sent from California to stay with relatives in Brooklyn after an incident of domestic abuse. With the help of a group therapy class and an amazing librarian who introduces Angel to some wonderful books by Black authors, Angel starts to find her voice and confidence again. A beautiful book about the power of words and music to help us overcome life's challenges. Highly recommended and great on audio narrated by Bahni Turpin!!
