I am glad I finished this... what a great book! It had a very slow start, but about halfway through it really picked up! Reading the 2nd book now and that one's even better.

The first book of a fantasy duology by Carol Berg. I particularly liked the self-deprecating narrator, but also appreciated the dark doomsday atmosphere and the depiction of magic. I did wish that the secondary characters played a more sustained role, several of them being either intriguing or likable or both. The book ends mid-adventure, and I have already bought the sequel on Kindle so that I can keep reading.

The pacing in this book is horrible. I really enjoyed the Rai-Kirah series by this author, so picked up the books in the series with high expectations. That being said, if you stick through the first 300 pages which are treacherous with mundane descriptions and not a lot of action, you won't be dissapointed. The second, and final, installment of this story is absolutly worth it.

a very detailed and vivid book - moves slowly and is very dark. some gore. can't say i like that part. he has been hiding from his magic family for years and finds himself "burdened" with friendship and responsibility. people still die - will read book 2.
