I really enjoyed this author's style of describing the setting. So much so that I'm looking forward to their future novels as their skill continues to improve. I feel like the story was nearly there, but was lacking something I haven't quite identified yet. I think it's because I never really felt attached to the main character. I did not dislike her but never really felt invested. An excellent selection for a beginning of fall, very autumn atmospheric, quick read.

Beautifully written! I loved the gothic-y castle and Cinderella touches.
I wish our MC was a touch older than 12, and that our story didn't end immediately after the climax.
The magic system of witches isn't explored too much, but that makes sense, because our little MC doesn't have anyone actually explain it to her.

Overall, a great spooky season read!

i really, truly love this book <3
while at times predictable, it was really well written, and i’m very picky about prose!
i loved Bram and Minnifer, and of course Zita. and Vikers!
i randomly found this book at my library and though it would be perfect for my fall TBR, and i was so right! :)

I picked this up because of the gorgeous cover art by the Balbusso sisters. Dark whimsy is a difficult tone to manage, and I was not finding it worked here. Comparisons to my beloved Diana Wynne Jones were derailed by the overly elaborate and flowery language, something she is not at all prone to. The world and castle felt resolutely like an invention, not a discovery, which is fatal in a fantasy.
