I always forget I enjoy historical fiction until I pick up something like this. Cried a lot, but not sure how much to attribute to the book and how much is from the connection with my own family's similar past.

I thought the concept was really good, and I love that she thought to turn her grandmother's story into a book. The idea of over 600 Australian women bunking on an aircraft carrier to cross the ocean and reunite with their husbands is super interesting and ripe ground for a story.

But the writing was just so messy. The structure was wild - the POV shifts were so rapid and it always took forever to figure out who was talking by which point you'd have to go back and start the section over. The frame narrative was completely unnecessary and introduced yet more characters for us to keep track of that added absolutely nothing to the core story. She would spend paragraphs on the working of the boat but left important characters' stories unfinished

I had never heard of the war brides until I read this book. The bravery of these women is almost uncomprehendable.

This book follows the story of a ship of war brides and potentially the most loveable, complex and brave characters I have read about in a long time.

I liked the historical records used in writing this book. However, the really slow start, confusing characters, and multiple stories told in the first third of the book were difficult for me. But, the book really picked up in the last half. I liked the conclusion as well. The fairly straightforward wrap up definitely helped create a satisfying ending.
