The slurs were…a choice…
Ignoring the slurs (seriously…I’m not sure they were necessary) this was a darkish story, but not nearly as absurd as her more recent stuff. I might have to mull this one over a bit before I have a more nuanced opinion.

this book is nasty. i mean i get it it was set in 1851 but gosh i feel so uncomfortable most of the time reading that. this book unravels how mcglue might or might not killed his best friend. the main character is so unlikeable but his relationship with johnson is sweet and kinda sus from the start. the idea was so interesting to me but actually reading it is just meh idk

I found this book to be very dense, boring, and dry. It was a difficult read, despite being so short. Although I appreciated the commitment to the plight of McGlue and his interesting story, the confusing timeline and odd pacing made me literally fall asleep while reading.
