I have read several of Lisa Scottoline's Mary DiNunzio books, but I had started well into the series. I decided to go to the beginning and read the books, so I could get the back story on Mary, the death of her husband, her life before joining with Bennie Rosato, etc.
I truly enjoyed this book. It was a fast-paced legal thriller, with a bit of a cliff hanger at the end. The book explains the death of Mary's husband, Mike, which is referenced in many of the later books. The book also introduces us to Mary's parents, her best friend-Judy Carrier, her twin sister-Angie, and Ned Waters, all characters found in other books in the series.

RATING: 3.5/5
COMMENTS:
I think that more could have been done with a book about a stalker with possibly more suspects or more twists and turns
SUMMARY:
This is a story about a woman who is working to become a partner in her law firm. She is a widow of almost a year because her husband was part of a hit and run accident. Mary started getting mysterious phone calls and notes from a stalker. She starts dating a man from her office but starts to think that he is the one behind the stalking. Mary goes out to dinner with her gay sectretary and on the walk home a car (who she had thought she saw on many occasions before) hits Brent, the secretary, and kills him. Now Mary has a suspicion that the stalker also killed her husband. It turns out that the judge she did an internship with was her stalker because he loved her and wanted to get rid of her husband and also the secretary, who he thought she was on a date with.

For Scottoline's first novel, it's pretty good. A legal sort-of thriller set in Philadelphia, which is why a coworker recommended Scottoline's books to me. A good fluff read, and she definitely had me guessing the whole time. It's a good introduction to the main character (there's a ton more in the series about Mary apparently), and I'll read her second novel next to see how it goes. I will say, I did find it interesting, since she wrote it in 1993, to read about how Philly wasn't like how it is today, and how she mentions the AIDS crises and alludes to the homophobia many still had then.
Mary is a lawyer at one of the most prestigious law firms in Philaelphia and in a short two months she is almost a shoe in to make partner. Her life seems to be going perfectly and on track. Unfortunately for Mary, someone is stalking her and it could be anyone she knows.
This book was entertaining, but there were parts that really bothered me. It seemed to be a little all over the place, there was a clear stalker plot, but the rest of the story didn't seem to flow too well. The part that really bothered me about this book was the love story that didn't seem to fit into this book at all. It was definitely insta love which is already annoying, but it served no purpose in the plot whatsoever which made reading about it annoying.
The sub plots were not my favorite; however, the main stalker plot was well thought out and you could definitely feel the fear of Mary as she tries to determine who is after her and why. It will leave you guessing throughout the book as to who is going everywhere that Mary went.

I enjoyed this book by Lisa Scottoline although not as much as Mistaken Identity. While I enjoyed reading this book from Mary's point of view, I didn't think that the "mystery" was as developed as I was hoping; the final scene didn't seem as climatic as I was expecting. Other than that, another enjoyable, fast read from Lisa Scottoline!
Really excellent except for the stigmatization of mental health. Depressed =\= homicidal
2.5⭐s rounded up:
Even though this was quite the slow burn, I'll try one more because there's 11 in this series. There's also a spin-off series. Perhaps I'll become invested in the characters?

medium-paced
Unpredictable ending, but after dragging the story on, it went to the conclusion very quickly.
