I think I am personally a little over the cross cultural memoir...at least if the author isn't doing anything new with it. This reads like a lot of other middle grade memoirs...a lot of exploration of identity and belonging, and if I hadn't read a lot of others that are similar, it would be great. There's nothing wrong with this book, just nothing particularly new within the genre either.

I really liked this heartfelt graphic memoir of a summer in 11 year old Kathy’s life when her family flies from Bangkok to Maine to spend time in her dad’s hometown. Her dad, an American much older than his Thai wife, is the only one in her family who seems to somewhat understand her but Kathy feels like her whole family is sort of distant and rarely talk to each other. Additionally, because she is part Thai and part American, she feels like she doesn’t fully belong in either world. She daydreams of belonging somewhere so she pins a lot of her hopes on summer camp, where she will spend part of her Maine summer - but things don’t go exactly as planned. I felt like Macleod did a good job showing the loneliness of feeling distanced and misunderstood and it’s a relatable story - sad with glimmers of hope. I also enjoyed the afterword and photos of the real family in the back

I'm so glad that there are more books coming out that are telling stories of people caught between two worlds. Too often those of us who are, are made fun of or are told to downplay one side of ourselves even though in reality neither side will be accepted fully. There is a balance that must be found and we must never feel shame for having two worlds to draw upon whereas most people only have one narrow perspective.
