Similar in many ways to other memoirs of kids with mixed heritage. A young person struggles finding their way because she belongs neither to one group or another. That’s not said to downplay the book at all; I think we all feel this push/pull as we grown up even if it’s not as extreme, and so I like these narratives of self discovery. This was well-executed, and had nice back after to connect the author to the story.

Where this one stood out for me was in Kathy’s lack of information about her parents. In this book at least, she does not learn about their past or what brought them together. And I appreciated the inclusion of one really compassionate camp counselor, who had some really solid advice.

Very enjoyable.

This graphic novel is a reflection on the author's childhood summers spent in Maine, featuring her family dynamic and her cross-cultural confusion of carrying both her parents' identities of Thai and American. I really felt for her throughout the story and could relate in my own subtle ways. The scenes at summer camp were especially nostalgic for me. I really loved her Afterword where she explains how she feels now as an adult, assuring any child who might pick up this book that they're not alone in that feeling of unbelonging. The more we tell these kinds of stories, the more empathy children can have to prevent the racism and xenophobia that she experienced growing up.

An enjoyable graphic novel memoir about always feeling like an outsider.

I absolutely ADORED this graphic novel about a girl torn between two countries and two cultures. Kathy's dad is from Maine and her mom is from Thailand. She spends the school year in Bangkok and the summers in Maine. And while she enjoys things about both countries, she doesn't feel like she completely belongs to one or the other.

Kathy's memoir takes us through a summer of her childhood while she thinks about family, culture, summer camp and blueberry pie.

The artwork is simplistic but in a way that feels cozy and nostalgic. It reminded me of reading "Amelia's Notebook" growing up.
