4.5/5 Stars. It would've been four stars, but the ending blew me away. I couldn't put it down for the last bit. It's mostly slow paced up until the end, with lots of POV switches and flashbacks The characters were lovable with realistic flaws and good character growth. TONS of found (queer) family, which I love. Lots of mystery and some really suspenseful parts, with twists and turns that I would've never guessed, but were foreshadowed wonderfully. It's main cast is in high school, a great YA book.
Graphic: Sexual content, Death, and Child death
Moderate: Injury/Injury detail, Blood, Murder, Drug use, Homophobia, and Grief
Minor: Cancer, Infidelity, Cursing, Bullying, and Alcohol

I did love the relationship between the witches - their love for one another and openness - and it was amazing to have such an unapologetically queer story. I just wish the characters and world building were a bit more robust so I could fully immerse myself in the story.

It’s the kind of story where you don’t always know what’s going on, but you stick around because the vibes—the eerie forest, the small town, the magic and mayhem and making out—are immaculate. I never knew what to expect, and thoroughly enjoyed watching the story unfold. I loved Danny and the Grays, especially Rush. Their dynamic was brilliant, as was their magic, which manifested in unique ways.
If you liked Spellbook of the Lost and Found by Moïra Fowley-Doyle or any of Anna-Marie McLemore’s books, I urge you to give this one a try. They’re all very queer, vaguely chaotic, and overall a great time.
Representation
- queer protagonist
- Black bisexual side character
- Filipino sapphic side character with chronic pain (from a leg injury)
- fat queer side character with synesthesia
- nonbinary gray-ace sapphic side character (uses she/her)
- sapphic side characters
Graphic: Death
Moderate: Homophobia
Minor: Cancer, Death of parent, Injury/Injury detail, and Sexual assault
Homophobia is discussed but not actively experienced by any of the characters. There’s one sex scene and it’s not graphic. There are multiple brief mentions of a side character getting hurt by falling out of a tree, and how her leg never healed; this happened prior to the story. There’s also a brief mention of another side character’s mother battling and dying from an unspecified cancer.caitlinjadams's review
