I hate to say it, but this was better expressed in the TV show. I like the idea of sharing Garnet's origin story in book form, but the final product glosses over some important parts (what is fusion? why doesn't fusion get more illustrations in a book about a fusion? was the crowd who witnessed Ruby and Sapphire's unconventional fusion part of an army or were they just battle spectators?) while also waxing philosophic about infinite possibilities and overriding reality. It seems a bit abstract for the usual picture book crowd, and it seems to have missed an opportunity to slow down and enjoy this sweet and important story.

I haven't had the opportunity to read this book to a kid (or have a kid read this book to me) so I am curious about how they would react this book. Do they understand it? Do they like it? Do they find the panels of Sapphire and Ruby's meta-conversation above and below the main text to be distracting/confusing or to be a wonderful addition?

As an adult reader and fan of the show, I think this book is just meh. I also think it will probably only be understood (and appreciated) by people who have already watched the series. It seems like it's a better book match for adults than kids, and I also imagine this book will be a better match for confident independent readers (like upper elementary and middle grade students) than used as a read-aloud for little ones.

Five stars, with the caveat that I love the show for its sweet, sincere, inclusive message wrapped in an oft hilarious package, and this beautifully illustrated book is a wonderful companion to the show and the episode it is based on.

This is such a cute book. The drawings are beautiful even if they are slightly different than in the show. The way Sapphire and Ruby interact while telling their story is so sweet and adorable. In some of the quotes I heard them as they sound in the show. Anyone who enjoys Steven Universe should read this book.

The art is beautiful and the format is very clever and cute, but I do think it might be a confusing layout if you haven't seen the episode of the show it's recreating.

It is one of the best stories of the entire Cartoon! That's saying a lot! Because Steven Universe is a great show, full of wonderful stories!

So yes, I almost cried with this scene and the two characters are so cute and awesome. Making this a storybook was an excellent Idea.

The illustrations are exquisite and yes, I'm so happy I have it with me and I will read it to all the kids that I can.
