A hard book to initially enjoy or even get into, especially when the key character is not that nice. The two stories that unwind here are ultimately immersive though and I got used to Jake enough to enjoy the story.

how freaking long has it been since i read a book in one sitting? i don't even remember.
(probably when i read [b: The Push|52476830|The Push|Ashley Audrain|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1609854219l/52476830._SY75_.jpg|71867231], which just goes to show how 2021 mystery releases are basically blessing my reading year!)
this was SO good. tightly plotted and incredibly well written. for some unforgivable reason i'd never heard of the author before, and thought this was her debut, but nay - she wrote the novel that HBO's The Undoing was based on. i never read it or watched the tv show, but i only heard good things about it, and it makes all the perfect sense in my head.
i need to get my hands on her backlist asap.
this book left with me with the same exhilarating feeling of reading [b: Gone Girl|19288043|Gone Girl|Gillian Flynn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1554086139l/19288043._SY75_.jpg|13306276] for the first time. the first 20% was good, if a bit wordy, but the entire rest of the book... well, i plowed through 80% of this in pretty much one sitting, sneaking bits into my workday and counting every minute until it was time for me to clock out and finally be able to finish this.
the main character is a completely atrocious, self-absorbed person - and i LOVED being in his head. the way jean describes an author's mind workings and thought processes were so interesting to me, having long abandoned my own writing dreams. you don't feel sorry by jacob finch bonner one bit during the novel; but you can't help but find yourself agreeing with his woe-is-me-soliloquies and be at least a little fascinated by everything that's going on.
i've long ago given up writing reviews that go into detail about the plot because you can pretty much always count on the goodreads summary being better at giving you that general idea than i am. what i try to convey when reviewing a book is the way it made me feel, the reasons for it, and why i think you should probably take my advice and read (or skip!) whatever title i'm talking about. with this one, all i want to say is that i'm a thriller lover, a mystery fan, and i can definitely recognize a Good One when i see it (based entirely on my own criteria).
if you're ever needing to get out of your head and stay up til dawn reading something, this is what i'd recommend. this is a Good One.

Fun structure, good writing, and lots of tension make up for any predictability in this book. A really satisfying page-turner with none of the corniness that's often built into suspense novels.
Read this because it won the summer reads contest on Fallon. It did not disappoint! It took me till about a quarter of the way through to really get into it, but once I did, it was hard to put down.

"Any novelist would understand what he'd done. Any novelist would have done exactly the same!"
captivating (after a certain point), VERY suspenseful when it matters, and two plot twists that made me gasp. i mean, when i finish a book wanting to physically yeet a character into a wall, i know the book's made an impact.

This is a classic twisty literary thriller, and if you know that, you may guess at the whodunit part relatively early. Much of the fun of the book is that it is about a writer who showed early promise that didn't pan out, who hasn't given up on the literary world but has settled into one of the outer circles of its hell--teaching at a low-residency writer's program at a no-name college. Through that program, he gets inspired with a fantastic plot, basically a sure-fire best-seller, which he writes, and he gets everything he wants--the author tour, the cover of Poets and Writers, the big-name agency, the movie deal. And then, the disgruntled fan, sending him mean messages. He wants to prove himself innocent of these anonymous accusations, and steps right into a nasty real-world plot.
It is absolutely a fun summer thriller, and absolutely nothing more than that. But we all need good popcorn books in the summer!
