I really enjoyed this book and flew through it in about 24 hours. However, was anyone else completely taken out of the story by her portrayal of people in the south? They were such cliched caricatures that I was distracted from the actual story. Also, mashed greens?? Just me?

Great start. I was really enjoying the first 150 pages. Then it got a bit slow with some interesting bits but a general decline in interests. Then a predictable and much too overdone ending. The epilogue was nothing enough to save the book. 3 stars. I don’t regrets reading it but I think if the plot the of the book doesn’t interest u, I think this is one you could skip.

The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz was a fun read! It follows Jake, a writing instructor whose career is basically in the dumps, who steals his dead student’s novel idea when he learns the student has passed away. I recently read Yellowface, which has a very similar plot, but the stories were distinct enough that I enjoyed both. Jake’s mounting paranoia as weird things start happening after he publishes “his” book kept me invested. While I didn’t quite buy that the plot alone would guarantee bestseller status, movie deals, etc., the excerpts from the stolen novel were actually pretty compelling. The pacing was solid and kept me guessing - I didn’t see the ending coming, which is always satisfying in a thriller. I enjoyed this one enough to read the aptly titled sequel!

It was a humdinger of an ending, and I didn't catch on until the last few pages, but it was a rally slow ride there
