Never split the party.

This was the worst book in the series. Only the fact that I was five books invested and the fast-readable writing kept me going until the end.

The Naomi storyline is what killed it for me. Her chapters where borderline skippable. Let's leave behind the best second chance you've ever got to reconnect with your bullshit ex boyfriend!

The Amos chapters were fun, and the Alex chapters pulled mercifully out of the cheap chick-flick cliche plot line it almost crashed into to turn around and get interesting.

I'm torn on the villain. You hate him not so much because he's over the top, but because you probably hate a guy like this in real life. He's so irritating in his stupid reaction to his situation. He monologs like a self-absorbed Palahniuk villain. This is the idiot that votes for Trump just so he can watch everything good fall apart around us. He's a tool.

This book was a setup. It doesn't get neatly wrapped up like the four previous ones, so it's my guess that the next ones are going to get real good. And maybe for that reason, this slog was worth it.

This is probably my favorite Expanse book yet. It felt really refreshing...almost like a "back to the roots" of the series type book. It probably wasn't that, really, because it's not like the series has meandered away or something. It just felt like that.

Probably because of how it treated the POV characters. Instead of following our favorites and then one or two new people around, we get to focus in on each crew member individually. I loved that move. It was really great to dig back into these characters and see some more of their background and watch them continue developing. I think the character development was great here, because we got to focus on characters intimately.

I also really loved how the plot was treated. This is probably where the "back to roots" feeling came from (although we did get to re-center on the main characters, too). There was a really great mix of plot lines that seemed to mix different genres, just like [b:Leviathon Wakes|8855321|Leviathan Wakes (Expanse, #1)|James S.A. Corey|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1411013134s/8855321.jpg|13730452] did...in that one, we had a noir mystery, a political intrigue story, and then a kind of zombie apocalypse type thing....here we have more political intrigue (these guys are pros at that part by now), some post-apocalyptic survival stories, a terrorist plot, and a lot of emotional relationship type stuff (not just between Naomi and Holden, and mostly not romantic anyways). It was all really well done.

I really love this series at this point. It's superbly done, and it's always fun to see the TV version of the books you're reading, so that's a plus for me too.

BRAVO! Best book yet of the series. Finally we've got the rhythm for chapters that deliver the goods: Holden, Alex Amos & Naomi. Hell yeah! Far superior to the TV Series now and leaving it in the rear view mirror.

This series keeps getting better and better and I don't even know what to say about it anymore.
Also, Amos finally has his own chapters!!
