quite like roxane and some of her takes but reading a whole book of her essays got tiring .. didn’t really learn anything novel about the world.

Roxanne Gay is observant and poignant in her writing. She lays out the issues and contextualizes them without pointing her finger at just one source as the primary cause of the problems facing women, men, people of color and otherwise. If she considers herself a bad feminist, then I do too! But better than not a feminist at all.

I loved her writing style and anecdotes. As I was reading, I could feel her passion about the subject which immediately hooked my interest.
The only downfall was there were too many opinions that it was lost in the book jumping from one to the next. Unfortunately, I don't believe I took away a lot from this book as it was the same perspectives and opinions from my college sociology classes.

For the first time I have a solid answer to the question, "who would you want to invite to dinner, living or dead?" Roxane Gay's essays were funny, eye-opening, and at times very uncomfortable. It's given me a lot to think about and made me question the opinions I hold and why. I found myself nodding along often as it felt like she had reached into my head and made concrete these vague, half-formed ideas and feelings about being a woman today. I really appreciated her idea that to call yourself a feminist you don't have act or feel a certain way and you don't have to be perfect. That you can champion women's rights and be angry about misogyny and still love singing along to pop songs with questionable lyrics. I think as long as I am approaching these things with my eyes wide open I'm doing OK.

There are many good points, but its more a memior of Gay's life than a feminist essay collection.
