This is a fantastic picture book for inferences! From what I've read, the language is made-up, which would be so fun to imagine with your students what is being said on these wonderfully illustrated pages. There is one line that says, "Booby Voobeck!" and I'm not sure how that would go over with middle schoolers, but other than that, this would be great for an inference mini-lesson.

This book is a masterpiece. Carson Ellis is a national treasure.

Everything is working really well here, but that moment when the language clicks (my 4yo figured it out before I did), that is the most magical thing. I would hate for my friends who don't have kids to miss out on this wholly astounding book.

Love the illustrations, the made up language and the inferring and expressive reading that needed to be done to read this. Paying close attention to illustrations and punctuation to read. Cute and sweet.

I thought about being really clever and doing my review entirely in what would be a mock-du iz tak-language, but then decided against it, because that would be too much work.  You know what's not too much work??  Reading this book.  Even though the language is made up, it's so easy to understand what's happening, especially with the linguistic similarities between that language and Ellis' illustrations.  It's truly a genius book, and there is definitely a reason why people are buzzing about this book.  It's just sweet, beautiful, and one of the most creative books there is.

I LOVED THIS. HOW CREATIVE CAN A BOOK CONCEPT BE? I think this is one of those books that feel like a secret when you're a kid, like a book that only you understand. The illustrations are colorful and amazing, and it's super fun to read aloud!

Absolutely brilliant! Not only are the illustrations enchantingly beautiful, but the entire book is written in what seems like (at the beginning) a nonsensical bug language, but by the end (through the magic of clever contextual cues) makes complete sense. Highly recommended for everyone, but especially if you happen to be a parent with a background in linguistics or developmental psychology.
