This book is a constant stream of consciousness and for that I applaud it, but in a functional sense, it is completely unintelligible in most places. It attempts to raise intriguing notions about counter culture and uses a lot of interesting metaphors and very (very) vsiceral imagery to convey this. However, because it is purposely SO abstract in order to not conform to typical literary standards, it means at least for me, that it is simply undigestable. I genuinely couldn't tell you what happens in this book and I literally just read it.

13 pages in and the white author deems her writing so beyond the white politics she’s describing by using the n word. I will not be reading further.

and?
Tell me,
did we ever get that close?

No. No we did not.

Listen, I thoroughly enjoyed the first 70 pages or so and thought Hval a real savant, a feminist genius lyrical literary icon and was ready to reread and pore over her work again before even finishing it. I loved her perspective on God and religion being synonymous with the capitalist traditionalist structures that lord (pun intended) over our daily lives and witchcraft as a form of anarchy and a sword to fight back against the oppressive forces in our world.

The next 160 pages were so utterly mind numbingly boring and overly verbose that I was PRAYING TO GOD to be DONE with the BOOK that I had SO ENJOYED previously.

Jenny Hval’s LOVE of language effectively made me HATE READING.

thank you goodbye x

I'll have to get back to it - I really enjoyed Hval's Paradise Rot, but maybe reading Girls Against God right after it was a bad choice. TBC (maybe)
