Interesting topic. This is the first time I've ever read a book that mainly talks about death workers and people who work around deaths. Seeing things from their perspective, and imagining how and why they do their job, not only gives me a lot of insights but also helps me to self-reflect. Thinking about death makes me reflect more on my life. How should I spend my lifetime so I'll die without regret and leave my family & friends without too much grief and sadness?

I've became interested in the culture surrounding death and then read Sue Black's very outstanding Written in Bone and became more interested. This is a very fascinating book - I found the prose a bit unnecessarily descriptive sometimes - but the spotlight that Campbell shines on death workers is fascinating, eg the bereavement midwife, the organization that deals with large scale mortality (disaster, accidents etc), embalmers... Really fascinating stuff. Wish I could've seen some of it in visual form.

This is a massively impressive journalistic project and looks at the death industry in a way I haven't seen done in a lot of similar works. There were people interviewed here whose inclusion first confused me, but by the end I think it all came together in a really unique way. I'd definitely recommend this to fans of Caitlin Doughty's work and other things like that, though I think the approach and voice are actually pretty different.
