"L" - My 2024 Alphabet Challenge
This lives up to the hype. As a neurodivergent person, I can't tell you how much I related to Elizabeth, Calvin, and Mad.
The book flows with such wonderful ease, I glided through it.
My wife and I could have many discussions about things as I kept getting angrier and angrier at how women were being treated, it's such a fantastic book in every way. It's not a book about chemistry, but about life and how to better yourself. So unbelievably wonderful.
I've only given it 4 stars because the ending seemed to wrap up in a very heavy info dumping session, which, whilst it was wonderful to get closure, answers, happy ending etc, it all just felt piled on very thick for the sake of rounding the book off, but that's just me. I had to reread lots of the last pages to make sure I'd digested it correctly and fully understood.
Pure excellence, thank you Bonnie Garmus

This was such a spectacular, fun, quirky, beautiful, empowering story! Loved every moment and was a fast and easy read. Loved the powerfule feminnist message and the main character, Elizabeth Zott was perfectly written and an inspirational character. I enjoyed how this book paid homage to women in pretty much STEM jobs who also juggle motherhood and other personal matters. As a hardworking ambitious woman myself who works in the clinical setting and works with a lot of science and research I truly appreciated the representation in this book.
I loved the relationship between Calvin and Elizabeth and loved how supportive of one another they were and it just goes to show behind every strong woman is an amazing and loving man!
Also the whole story gave me sort of Big Bang Theory mixed with Forrest Gump vibes for some reason! LOVE a story that features a beloved animal/pet in the cast of characters too and the fact that his name was Six Thirty was unique and he had a voice in the story! Very well executed!
A lot of the other surrounding characters were also lovable, I loved Harriet (who sort of reminded me of my amazing strong mum) and how she entered their lives and also Wakely seems like the sweetest, most good natured, grounded priest.
Really recommend this one, everyone should pick it!
