“Sometimes life gives us the terrible gift of our own wishes come true.”

After reading the Folk of Air trilogy earlier on in the year, I was excited to start the duology! I liked that it took place in an older time when Oak and Sureness had grown.

Reading the trilogy, I was excited to read more of Suren’s backstory. And for some strange reason, I related more to her life than I did Jude.

Coming into this book from a reading slump, I worried my brain wouldn’t keep up with the fantasy element. And being a couple of months since I read the trilogy, I worried I wouldn’t remember the important parts that linked the two storylines together.

Suren’s character is ambitious, determined, head strong. Whereas Oak is the charismatic, fierce, cheeky villain that Suren easily falls in love with. And who wouldn’t?! The banter, the teasing! The tension between the two! I was falling in love with him!

The plot twist at the end! I didn’t see coming either! And when it happened I reprimanded myself to not see it sooner!

Another great book from Holly Black, and I look forward to continuing the duology! 4⭐️

I LOVED this book.
It was different from TCP by many regards but Wren and Oak are amazing - yes, yes both of them. I had a hard time with Wren at first but the end- no f-ing way in hell.
I need the second book so bad!!! Like, this mind-blown revelation and twist?
Honestly I get why Oak did what he did but go Wren be as angry as you like <3 we love an anger-driven character, calls home a little too loudly lol.
Also Oak putting himself in harms way because he would rather it be him than his family????? you preaching the choir brotha
anyway I love both of them so much
the only issue would be the pacing of the beginning I guess?? but also I do understand the need for this, as it does inforce the climax' impact and the later events
Deeply recommand.

The writing style is amazing as always, the quality great. The story is ok (what annoys me the most is that it's based on the stupid idea of saving Madoc, like he didn't cause enough issues... )
I liked Suren ok. She's not amazing but not terrible. I might have rated it higher but... My main issue with it is Oak.

I never liked Oak in the Cruel Prince series, but he was a kid and didn't appear much, so I could ignore him. I had hopes he would have grown up in more than age, but apparently not.
He's still an idiot through and through, and I highly disliked him. There was also zero chemistry between the two. Every turn of a page just seemed to get more annoying.

It really is such a pity.

Ngl that ending was fucken sick. Having Wren have Meldith (? I can’t spell) heart.
I struggled to get into the book, I didn’t enjoy the pov at first but the more I read the more I enjoyed. Kinda sad it took so long for me to finish the book but the middle and ending was really good. So yay!
