read this for a class, but so glad that i did. the art was amazing and i really liked the style! really making me reflect on my relationship with my parents and helping me put words to the things that i feel. it’s always crazy to think about the different lives that our parents lived before we were born. a very heartbreaking but inspiring memoir

A stunning visual memoir that traces a family's history through trauma. One of the most cathartic books that I have ever read.

Calling this beautiful is hard, because the images are but the story is honest and difficult at the same time. The complexities of the family dynamics are really well portrayed, and I loved the way the author reckons with the different opinions she had of her parents as a child and an adult. The last chapter truly made me tear up, and the last few pages are beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. I also really appreciated the length of this story, it really felt like we got a chance to spend enough time with every bit of the story.
