In the current climate, a work on the freedom of publishing books without getting approval from the government is particularly pertinent. Much easier to read than other Milton words, it approaches the issue from multiple angles, among which the historical, the positive, the normative, the sociological etc.

My only issue is that occasionally, it wanders. I think the writing could have been significantly improved by being more succinct.

Highly recommended.

"That virtue therefore which is but a youngling in the contemplation of evil, and knows not the utmost that vice promises to her followers, and rejects it, is but a blank virtue, not a pure; her whiteness is but an excremental whiteness"

Milton makes the case against licensing (and by nature, a case for reading broadly). He argues for the virtue of discernment; and of course discernment must mean that there are several things to discern from. Truth can be found in "bad" books, and evil can be found in "good" books. Foolish people can destroy nations with "good" books, and wise men can shed light on "bad" books in ways that can save souls. Of course, with every piece by Milton, there's a forest of words to work through, but every now and then you find killer one-liners that punch you in the face with truth. Great stuff.
