Dune season is over, because I'm allllll in on Hylerion now!!

the world building was so, SO massive for such a small book but with each character's tale the pieces fit together nicely and really told a fascinating story. Some of the stories worked better than others, but for me the standouts were Father Hoyt's story, and Sol's story might be one of the most disturbing, beautiful, sad, and incredible I've ever read.

A bit of a bummer that this book has no real ending - but I've since started book 2 and - treating it as the second half of the book as it was intended - I think Hyperion Cantos might be one of my new favorite stories. I close my eyes at night and all I can think of is the Shrike and the Time Tombs.

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

Where do I begin?

While I understand that the book was a product of its time, this book is incredibly misogynistic and unpleasant to read if you have a shred of decency and a brain.

Multiple uses of the word retard, faggot and oriental  (to name a few).

This is presented as a space opera but all I got was that maybe the author would have been better off writing the smut porno he wanted to write. And that maybe he should have written the fanfic where he made love to Keats.

The Father describes a group of indigenous people as a band of bald headed, retarded children. So that was cool.

Every single women in the book serves to further the story of the men in the book. They have no unique voice or purpose. Upon the introduction of the first female character, the Console describes a stirring in his loins upon looking at her. The only other female character in the group is Rachel, an infant of a few weeks with no voice. No female characters talk to each other. In the General’s story, while fighting for his life, a woman saves his life on the battlefield. So obviously they have it out right there in explicit detail. And for every other battle the general fights, she is there to “make love” in the middle of it. The poet then refers to this woman as “that bitch” for no apparent reason. During a fight scene, where she has just fought for her life and is covered in sweat, Simmons explains how hard her nipples are and how curvaceous her body is. The author also describes The General’s anxiety as “scrotum lifting tension.” Yes, I had to pause and contemplate this for a good two minutes.

The Poet routinely quotes Shakespeare, Milton and Keats. The book is set in 2735 and you are telling me that no other famous poets have come out and written anything? It continued to take me out of the story that is apparently set so very far in the future. Simmons – you couldn’t have come out with poets or stories to flesh out your world?

The poet also describes how his professor made it impossible to keep girls and women on staff, including android, because he kept trying to molest them but it was okay because the man was not a homosexual and never tried anything with him. Not even the grossest thing the Poet said. He later described a woman that had the complexion of a peach, too perfect to be touched but that even the most timid of men would dream of violating. He says this while describing her murdered body.

I got to the 50% mark when I asked myself what I was doing? Life is far to short to read a shitty book written by a misogynistic man.
