This is a really good book. Sometimes it dragged alittle bit, but not enough to put me off the book or the series. I really like that Alex is a very complicated "hero". She isn't good, but she's not necessarily bad. The book does end on a cliff hanger, but the primary story is resolved in a way I didn't completely see coming.

Spoilers
The Dean killed Tara because he wanted to create a nexus of power so that the St. Elmo group could build a new tomb/house. But the Dean wasn't correct on how to create a nexus. It wasn't the murder of a woman. It was actually the English professor who was eating the souls of women like Alex who could see ghosts. The professor was actually the body of the Bridegroom's finance's (Daisy) handmaid. And she consumed the souls to give her long life. The Dean did try to kill Darlington by having him eaten by a hell hound. But Darlington was probably turned into a demon and the next book is when Alex and Dawes try to save him. And I think he became a demon because he probably killed his grandfather. Yeah. Convoluted but I think it worked.

Really really enjoyed this! Excited to read the sequel. One point that did irk me though was the references to white cotton gloves being used in handling rare books and materials. That’s false! No longer are they typically used because they dampen the dexterity of the fingers and can cause more damage to materials than clean hands can. Anywho, that’s just my one irk cause I work with rare books.

A book you won’t want to put down. The plots and twist of this book were wonderfully unpredictable. At first it was to follow the time change in between chapters but it comes to a cohesive ending.

I don’t mind an “I see dead people” story, especially when dark magic and secret societies are involved. Ninth House was way too much for me in terms of cursing, sexual assault, sexual content, etc. I read far longer than I should have because the premise of the book is so compelling. And for a little while the content that bothered me just seemed to distract from the narrative, not overshadow it. But it quickly built up to eclipsing the story for me.

Leigh Bardugo is an excellent writer. Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom are new favorites from my reading list this year. But Ninth House was absolutely not for me.
