The beginning was very rocky but after the initial premise set up and the summary of all the previous books it picked up. This book is significantly longer than others in the series and now I see why. This story was a monster and they knocked it put of the park! I would have enjoyed the recap of previous books if I didn't just finish rereading all the other books in the series.

Loved it. Second fave in the Innkeeper series. It’s just not as perfect as Hidden Legacy.

Sean does some pretty cool stuff in this one, and Dina is her usual ultracompetent self. Maude Edwards is hosting a galactic Bachelor, basically, with 12 species coming to compete for the right to mate with Kosandion, the big emperor dude. There’s plenty of tension and politicking and funny moments and sexy moments in true Ilona Andrews style.

I did feel it was a little wordy — there was so much explanation necessary given all the new species in attendance. But still, a great read with a powerful ending.

Every time I have a bad headache, I turn to audiobooks and spend all day curled up listening to a story - and this book is probably the best from the Inkeeper's Chronicles series. Dina and Sean must hold an event for an emperor, who is searching for a spouse among many different "viable" species on the galaxy, which includes a fish. The event is held at Gertrude Hunt since no other inkeeper wanted to hold it. This story results in a super fun plot, and we learn more about Caldenia's past and family.

Graphic audio adaptations are wonderful, but I was surprised to realise that Sean is now being voiced by Danny Gavigan. Gavigan is my favourite male voice so I was pretty pleased, and I hope he keeps voicing Sean if Graphic Audio adapt more of these books.

Re-read April 2024- I loved how this one ended with hope of seeing more of Helen and Maud and Arland!! I didn’t catch that the 1st time. Excellent series.

Original review: Another fascinating book from IA- stellar. Massive 5 stars. So good, and it's a longer story that I for one savored and drew out slowly.

The imagination needed for this world, the characters, the orchestrating of these characters, the plot and the plotting, an intergalactic "The Bachelor" with an HEA- It boggles my mind.

Sean must realize he doesn't need to go see the world- the world comes to them at the Inn!

We find Dina and Sean recuperating from the last Inn experience when Wilmos is kidnapped. They know pretty quickly that it is a trap, but the only way to enter the trap is to gain entry through a portal. The portal is owned by the Dominion, who need someone to host their "Spousal Selection" aka "The Bachelor/Sovereign".

So Dina, Sean and a few others (Gaston, Tony, Cookie, Karat, Caldenia, Dagnokor, etc.) put on a show and man, I was here for it! Lavish, detailed, layer and layer of meaning and deception, this is a very enjoyable story. Loved the debate being presided over by the Philosophical Space Chickens.

Added later- Oh yeah, and Space Fish with jazz fins that can send you into a seizure. Hilarious.

Quotes:
It was just Gaston’s luck that Orro’s prized duck, which he had worked on for three days, had finished cooking. Gaston cut off another piece, speared a sliver of potato dusted with herbs, and chewed with obvious pleasure.
“Should we leave you two alone?” Sean asked.

“What can I do for you?”
Cookie narrowed his eyes into sly slits. “I have not seen you for so long. I miss my dear friends. I have come to spend time with you.”
“So Clan Nuan wants to expand its business to the Seven Star Dominion.”
Cookie’s eyes widened in shock. He clasped his hands to his furry chest. “How could we possibly, even if we wanted to? That’s Clan Sai territory. I am simply here on vacation. I work too hard. So hard.” lol

And Dina and Sean grow even closer:
“This could be made much simpler if we just locked Caldenia up until it’s over,” Sean said.
“Sometimes you say things that make me wonder about you.”
“No need to wonder. I’m a simple man. I love you and I will protect you. And the inn. Even if I have to murder Caldenia and everyone else to do it.”
I stood on my toes and kissed him. “What if we don’t murder anybody?”
The corners of his mouth curved. “No promises.”

And such helpful advice:
"It is a basic rule of any galactic warfare. Never get into a land war with a vampire. Especially during the Feudal period.”

Bravo- I enjoyed all the little details that built this story as well as the details that are shared about her parents and their Inn at the end. I am glad this is still continuing- what fun.
