I've been reading early novels and read this after two other late 18th century French novels and some history books related to the French Revolution. This book is nauseating and shocking. I always finish what I start, otherwise, I would not have finished the book. The horrifying descriptions of libertine acts may have been the author's imagination, but there probably was truth to the treatment of the poor women and the behavior of aristocrats and criminals. No wonder the revolution happened. Throughout the book various characters discuss issues related to good and evil, weak vs strong, men vs. women, which are at times thought provoking. But doesn't make up for the horrible descriptions of debauchery.
