This was such an interesting read! I loved being able to puzzle along with the detective so I could find out the truth. It’s written like a classic detective novel, which is where its charm lies. Would definitely recommend it to those who love detective novels! I did find parts of the solution a bit predictable, but large parts of the unfolding of what happened were still interesting to read due to the intricacy with which the story has been set up.

Rounding up from a 3.5?
Though the initial chapters were rather slow (mostly exposition, setting the scene), the story felt very well paced from the moment the murders started. It's my first time reading a mystery in a while, and my first time reading a mystery translated from another language ever, and it reminded me of why I like the genre so much!
It's the type of mystery where I felt like I knew who was behind everything, but I had no clue how they pulled it off. The answer was incredibly convoluted and there is no way I could have predicted it. I think I had to suspend my disbelief a bit when the mystery was uncovered, because that was a LOT.
My only real downside with this book was how quickly it ended. There wasn't any epilogue or anything: once Kindaichi starts exposing the mystery, the book just ends with him rambling off the facts of what happened. I guess I just wanted a little more of a resolution!
Overall, a very fun read with lots of comeuppance.

I very much enjoyed this and guessed the guilty party and another twist. Very descriptive in parts, quite long winded in it sometimes. The characters head scratching gets annoying too but a great read nonetheless.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The 'murder mystery' aspect was developed well as the story built up and the characters were complex, all motivated by interesting and varying reasons. Some of the descriptive passages were a bit dense and heavy-handed but overall a very good novel.
