This is an emotional story. It was difficult to read because of the heaviness of the story. It's well written.  I like the way we alternate between Edward's life after the crash and the events that lead up to the crash. Edward or Eddie lost his immediate family in a plane crash. He was the only survivor in the crash. He has trouble facing what happened to him. His aunt and uncle try to protect him and take care of him the best they can.  He's in therapy, but refuses to discuss the crash. Outside of his bubble people have been posting about him on social media and family members of the other passengers want to ask him questions.  He is a 12 year old boy who has to deal with survivor's guilt and grief.  He makes friends with his neighbor Shay and she helps him deal with his issues. When he turns fifteen he and Shay find all of the letters that people have written him over the years.

First, I almost never read the acknowledgements at the end of a book but after finishing this story, I felt like I had to. READ THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AT THE END OF THE BOOK!! The emotion and kindness and respect shown by the author toward the inspirations for the story is incredible.

This book was recommended to me by a patient and I am so thankful she did. I went in completely blind and I honestly recommend that approach. Even though you learn what's happening fairly quickly, it made the story that much more impactful. This story made me almost cry multiple times, smile so hard my cheeks hurt. I felt for every character and was so thankful for the people surrounding Edward. This story makes you stop and think about how you need to live your life because you never know what will happen next. Tell your family you love them. Write the book you been keeping in your mind. Take pictures of everything. Travel everywhere. Love and live.

When this book was published, I couldn't read it because it sounded too depressing.  I'm glad I decided to try it now.  The subject matter was sad, but the book was hopeful and uplifting.  It's a beautiful tale of grief and how being surrounded by good people can make it bearable.
