A very cutesy, low-stakes story. Perfectly fine to be a hallmark movie
NO SPOILERS.
I really like this book. I like the witty comedy and absolutely loved the writing plus the cover. Plus it’s has those quick chapters but I would suggest and recommend to take your time with the book and reflect it.
I wanted to read this book for a while now and it’s one of my favorites that I’ve read so far during my reading journey.
Rate: 4.8/5!

Absurd but delightful. Bizarre things unfold in surprising dribs and drabs, just like in life. For the elder millennial who keeps trying (and failing) to love Emily Henry.

4 stars. Quite possibly one of the strangest and weirdest books I’ve read. But in a good way? Let me try to find the words to explain.

Our MC, Jane, is a lawyer who gets arrested for having sex on the roof of her NYC apartment building. She is sentenced to home confinement, and takes advantage of her unfortunate circumstances to meet her neighbors. Through the grapevine, Jane finds out there is another person with a court-mandated ankle bracelet living in the building. They become friends. Meanwhile, the lady who called the cops on Jane and told the cops to arrest Jane, dies under mysterious circumstances. And guess who's their main suspect?
Okay, so here's what I think. This book is perfect for people (like me!) who are stuck in a rut or are bored of the usual tropes.
Ms. Demeanor is marketed as a fiction book because it can't be considered a mystery novel, with only a pinch of unresolved mystery, or a romance novel, with no attraction or sexual tension.
This could be fairly disappointing for readers who like mysteries or romances.
There were a lot of things I enjoyed about this book, but they ended up being not very relevant to the overall plot of the story. I enjoyed hearing about Jane's cooking Tiktoks. I enjoyed the relationship between Jane and her sister. I even enjoyed that weird stuff that happened with her neighbor Mandy .
One of the things I liked about this book was how normal the romance was. Most romances in romance books are star-crossed, 'sexual tension you could cut with a steak knife', 'oh no he's hot', kinds of romances. By comparison, this book's romance was oddly normal. You could almost say that Jane and Perry have zero chemistry, but I see it differently. They were friends that became partners due to timing and circumstances that brought them together. In my limited relationship experience, and having seen others in relationships, this is a very normal way of people getting together. Hot sparks don't need to fly in the air for a successful and happy relationship.
If I had to summarize this book's plot, I would say: 'This is the story of why Jane was put on house-confinement for six months and what happened while she was stuck in her apartment building." That is the entire plot of this book. There are multiple weak plot threads driving the action, but none of them were strong enough to completely hold my attention. My brain was confused about what I was supposed to focus on.
I really did like this book, I just wish there had been a bit more driving me towards the story's resolution. Also,.

we never find out if the peeping-tom lady was murdered by her Polish family, and we never find out why she listed Jane as the responsible party in her death note
How’s an attorney whose one night stand resulted in a felony and an inability to legally practice law supposed to cope while on house arrest? Jane’s knack for cooking, matchmaking, entrepreneurship, and TikToking made this book a page-turner, despite the absence of courtroom drama. It’s like an episode of Friends - light and laughable with an unrealistic but entertaining amount of situational drama shared between one small group of neighbors.

An odd little romcom, it eschewed some of the usual romcom formulas, which in the end, made it rather dull. There were aspects I was excited about (TikTok cooking successes? Suspicious characters across the street?) that fizzled out instead of becoming memorable.)
