This book started middle-of-the-road and descended fairly quickly to mediocre, before landing at straight-up lacking merit by the end. It was a light and fast read, but that’s because it lacked substance of any sort. It’s about art, law, TikTok, cooking, murder mystery, and marriages legitimate and illegitimate, but it’s also not about any of those topics because none of them receive any sincerity or depth. This reads like a first draft, where the author had some plot threads and character ideas but didn’t go back to strengthen any of those concepts or tie them meaningfully together.
Jane, the main character, is judgmental as hell, and her favorite pastimes seem to be giving legal advice while her license to practice law is suspended and lying to people about who she represents and what legal ramifications really exist. Every character was weak, but Jane, as our POV character, had shockingly little depth. It’s shocking to read a book about home confinement that was published in 2023 and sees confinement in one’s home as a fun plot device rather than something that we all experienced in 2020. There’s zero emotional investigation of how Jane gets through her days, yet there is ridiculous time spent on the green card marriage plot. The most sympathetic character in the book is Mandy, yet we don’t see her relationship with Jane grow until they both suddenly have personality transplants two-thirds through the timeline of the story. Jane and Perry’s relationship is distinctly lacking in chemistry, and I hated Jane’s lack of transparency about it with her sister.
This book could have been a thriller about Jane, Frances, Dani and Krzysztof, or it could have been contemporary fiction about Jane, Jackleen, and Perry, but instead it was two-half baked stories shoved together. Not a single thing felt earned, and Jane didn’t seem to change or self-reflect at all throughout, though she was handed a happily-ever-after for career and romance anyway. Credit for being a light and fast read, but weak in every other aspect.

It should have ended before it did, last chapters after the six months are up and they get engaged text felt entirely unnecessary and dragged.
